Level 2 Apprenticeship

Groundworkers are at the heart of every construction project, preparing sites for structural work and ensuring each stage of the build begins on solid foundations. Working across residential, commercial and civil engineering projects, they develop a broad range of practical skills that are essential throughout the construction industry.

Our Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship combines hands-on site experience with expert training, helping apprentices build the knowledge, confidence and technical ability needed to become a skilled and reliable member of any construction team.

Apprenticeship Overview

Groundworkers are often the first trade on site and remain involved throughout the construction process, working alongside engineers, supervisors and other construction trades to prepare, construct and complete projects safely and efficiently. Their work plays a key role in ensuring sites are ready for the trades that follow.

During the apprenticeship, learners gain experience in site preparation, drainage, concreting, external works and hard landscaping, while developing an understanding of construction drawings, setting out, health & safety and environmental responsibilities. The programme provides the practical skills and industry knowledge needed to build a successful career across a wide variety of construction sectors.

  • Qualifications Gained

    On successful completion, apprentices will achieve the Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship Standard. If required, you will also complete Functional Skills qualifications in English & Maths.

  • Suitable For

    Anyone 16+ who is not in full-time education. School leavers, career changers, or anyone looking to begin a career in the construction industry. No experience needed.

  • Start Dates

    We offer multiple start dates throughout the year, with immediate starts available for applicants who have secured employment and completed the enrolment process.

  • Locations

    This apprenticeship is delivered from our training centres in Plymouth and Bristol, alongside practical learning in the workplace.

  • Delivery Method

    Training is delivered through a combination of centre-based workshops, workplace learning, and regular reviews with your tutor and assessor.

  • Apprenticeship Duration

    The apprenticeship typically takes around 18 months to complete, depending on individual progress.

  • Progression Opportunities

    After completing the apprenticeship, learners can progress into employment as a qualified bricklayer, move on to higher-level qualifications, or specialise in other areas of construction.

  • Entry Requirements

    Applicants must be employed, or have secured employment, in a bricklaying role before starting the apprenticeship. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and commitment to working safely are essential.
