An exciting new way to gain an Apprenticeship in Construction
We have a new exciting opportunity in Plymouth starting in September 2025 to assist individuals who hold an EHCP (Educational Health Care Plan) into a Construction Apprenticeship. We achieve this with supported internships.
So, what is an internship?
A Supported Internship is a structured, work-based study programme designed for young people aged 16 to 24 who have learning difficulties, disabilities, or special educational needs (SEND) and hold an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
The programme helps young people prepare for employment by combining real work experience, skills development, and specialist support in the workplace. Each intern is guided by a dedicated Job Coach who provides one-to-one mentoring throughout the placement. Supported Internships typically last up to 12 months.
Who can take part?
Supported Internships are open to:
Young people aged 16–24
Those with learning difficulties, disabilities, or SEND, who have an EHCP
How many days am I with the employer, and how many days am I in Greenlight?
For the first 3 months, you will spend 2 days a week with Greenlight Training, after the first 3 months, you will then be placed with one of our employers 2-3 days a week. So your week after 3 months will consist of 2 days in Greenlight and 2-3 days with an employer.
Do I get paid when I'm with my employer?
You are not usually paid for a Supported Internship, as it is work experience and education.
Is there employment at the end of the Internship?
While employment cannot be guaranteed, the goal of the programme is to support learners into paid work. By the end of the internship, interns will have gained real work experience, practical skills, and a recognised qualification, all of which improve their chances of securing employment. Greenlight will work closely with employers to create progression routes.
What support is provided?
Our Job coaches and SEN team will engage closely with both employers and learners during their placements. Their role will be to ensure both parties feel supported and to provide guidance and advice as needed.
Will functional skills be delivered during the programme?
Yes. Where appropriate, learners will continue to develop their English and maths skills alongside their internship, this will be through Functional Skills qualifications or tailored support to help build confidence and apply these skills in real workplace situations.
