Greenlight Safety & Training is proud to be leading the delivery of the Building Lives Academy, launched on 19 January as part of the social value commitment from Willmott Dixon during the construction of Derriford Hospital’s new Emergency Care Building, part of the NHS.
Willmott Dixon is a UK-based construction and property services company delivering major public sector projects across healthcare, education and infrastructure. On this project, they are the main contractor responsible for delivering the new Emergency Care Building at Derriford Hospital, working in partnership with the NHS to improve urgent and emergency care provision in the region.
As the chosen training provider, Greenlight is at the centre of the Building Lives Academy - working alongside Willmott Dixon, Sphere Solutions, Seetec and regional employers to create real opportunities for local people to step into construction.
The academy is built around what we do best: practical, employer-led training that leads to real outcomes. Designed for individuals who may be out of work or facing barriers to employment, the programme combines hands-on learning with tailored employability support. Learners gain recognised entry-level qualifications, work towards their CSCS card, and receive support with CV writing, job searching and interview preparation.
Each cohort supports 10–15 local residents, with training shaped around individual needs and the skills employers are actively looking for. Through our close links with industry and the wider supply chain, we’re able to connect learners directly with live opportunities on site and beyond, creating clear pathways into employment.
By embedding training directly into a major live NHS construction project, the Building Lives Academy is helping open access to the construction industry while ensuring local people benefit from the opportunities it creates.
It’s a strong example of how Greenlight delivers training with purpose: locally focused, practical, and designed to get people into work.
